Teamed for Defense - A Tribute to Armed Forces Day

In honor of this memorable holiday, we would like to share a piece of history with you.

According to the Department of Defense:

On August 31, 1949, Secretary of Defense Louis Johnson announced the creation of an Armed Forces Day to replace separate Army, Navy and Air Force Days. The single-day celebration stemmed from the unification of the Armed Forces under one department -- the Department of Defense.

In a speech announcing the formation of the day, President Truman "praised the work of the military services at home and across the seas" and said, "it is vital to the security of the nation and to the establishment of a desirable peace." In an excerpt from the Presidential Proclamation of Feb. 27, 1950, Mr. Truman stated:

“Armed Forces Day, Saturday, May 20, 1950, marks the first combined demonstration by America's defense team of its progress under the National Security Act, towards the goal of readiness for any eventuality. It is the first parade of preparedness by the unified forces of our land, sea, and air defense.”

The theme of the very first Armed Forces Day was "Teamed for Defense."

Senator Cochran was commissioned an Ensign in the U.S. Naval Reserve and assigned to duty aboard a heavy cruiser, the USS MACON, which was homeported in Boston, Massachusetts. He served on this ship for 18 months becoming the ship's legal officer after graduating as an honor student from the U.S. Navy School of Justice in Newport, Rhode Island. He also became qualified as Officer of the Deck, in port and underway.  When his ship was decommissioned in January 1961, he was assigned to the staff of the Commandant of the Eighth Naval District in New Orleans, Louisiana, to complete his two year tour of active duty in the Navy.

Mississippi understands the value of teamwork, and that is why citizens across the state overwhelmingly have chosen Haley Barbour as our Governor, Roger Wicker as a member of Congress, and Senator Thad Cochran as a United States Senator.  During the week of Memorial Day, a series of videos of Senator Cochran from the Mississippi Republican State Convention will be shown to further emphasize the value placed on teamwork among Mississippi GOP.  Don’t miss what Senator Cochran has to say about his colleagues, the Mississippi Republican party, John McCain, and more.  Visit our www.thadforsenate.com during the upcoming weeks to watch the daily updated video footage.
